Depending on the complexity of the character‘s hairstyle, some cosplay wigs are almost ready to wear straight out of the box, while others may require more effort to achieve the polished look in your heart. Some cosplayers might also choose to seek help from professional wig stylists for advanced styling.
At SAKUMETA, our mission is to help every anime and cosplay lover bring their favorite characters to life. We believe cosplay should be joyful, expressive, and accessible. That’s why we created the Wig Styling Level star rating system to help you quickly understand how much styling might be needed after you receive your wig.
Our goal is to reduce the time and difficulty of styling so that more people can enjoy the creative fun of cosplay, regardless of experience level.
Of course, we understand that everyone has different aesthetics and preferences. The same wig might feel ready-to-wear for one person, while another may want to add their own custom touches. That’s totally valid! Our star ratings are meant as helpful references—not strict rules. We hope you’ll find them useful, and we appreciate your understanding.
What Is Wig Styling Level?
Every wig on our site is assigned a Wig Styling Level, ranging from
(one star, the easiest) to (five stars, the most advanced). This rating is designed to give you a quick idea of how much styling effort might be needed to achieve the look shown in our product photos. It’s important to note: this level reflects the work needed after you receive the wig, not how complex the character itself is.
We know the same character wig base can lead to very different results depending on who’s styling it. Some cosplayers prefer a simple finish, while others might want high-precision accuracy, and that’s totally okay!
To make things easier, all of our wigs are lightly pre-styled, especially for tricky parts like braids, dyed color gradients, or signature M-shaped bangs. You’re not starting from a raw wig—but results can still vary depending on your skill level and goals.
Because styling is subjective, a five-star wig doesn’t mean you can’t handle it—it just means it may require more time, tools, or practice. If you're new to styling, we recommend checking out some wig tutorials (you can find ours on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook) and following along as you learn.
Wig Styling Level Explained: How We Rate It
Our rating scale considers the amount of work required to achieve the look shown in our product photos. We take into account factors such as trimming, product use (like hairspray or wax), heat styling, and structural elements like upward-pointing shapes or anti-gravity designs.
Here's how we break it down:
Rating | Description | Details |
---|---|---|
1 Star – Minimal Styling Required |
Almost no cutting needed. Just apply some hairspray or wax to adjust the shape, and you’re good to go! ✅ Perfect for cosplay beginners or casual cosplay shoots. |
|
2 Stars – Light Adjustments, Basic Trimming & Styling |
Requires a small trim (such as bangs or sideburns), basic shaping using hairspray or heat tools—or sometimes both. ✅ Still very beginner-friendly. |
|
3 Stars – Intermediate-Level Styling |
Involves more detailed trimming and shaping around the face. You’ll likely need both heat styling and products like hairspray or wax. Some minor spiking style or sculpting might be involved. ✅ Slightly more time required, but manageable. |
|
4 Stars – Experienced Styling Techniques |
Includes upward flips, stronger shaping, and probably partial anti-gravity effects. Requires cutting, heat styling, teasing, and strong-hold spray or wax. Basic pre-styling for the hardest parts is included, but achieving the final look takes some effort, patience, and time. ✅ Recommended for cosplayers with moderate to advanced styling skills. Great for those comfortable using multiple styling tools. |
|
5 Stars – Advanced Experienced Styling |
Significant styling is required to achieve the product photo look. Usually spikes, lifted sections, or anti-gravity styles are involved. ✅ Best for experienced styling skill users, or confident DIY-ers willing to learn and spend time (even if you are new to styling). |
